Speed of Sound Propagation

The speed of sound propagation represents the speed at which sound waves propagate. It is a vector perpendicular to the wavefront. From a generic point of view, this velocity is independent of the amplitude of the sound pressure. However, it is dependent on the characteristics of the propagation medium. For current conditions you have the following velocities for the given propagation media:

– Air = 340 m/s;
– Water = 1460 m/s;
– Wood = 1000 to 4900 m/s;
– Cement = 4000 m/s;
– Steel = 4700 to 5150 m/s;
– Glass = 5000 to 6000 m/s.
