Irrigation channels rehabilitation

Imperalum has given special attention to hydraulic works and in particular to agricultural hydraulic works, and has carried out laboratory research in order to find suitable materials and systems that are ready to respond to the demands of this market. The aim is therefore to contribute with technical solutions leading to the rehabilitation of irrigation channels.

In this sense, and after some practical experience gained with the application of bituminous membranes in irrigation channels, Imperalum felt the need to develop, in close collaboration with the entities involved in these projects, systems for the protection and rehabilitation of irrigation channels, which we intend to respond effectively from a technical and economic point of view to the demands of this type of work.

The problem of rehabilitating concrete irrigation channels and the methods and techniques for carrying out this rehabilitation should be based on a thorough diagnosis of the condition of the channel.
This diagnosis is essential because in the vast majority of cases of irrigation channels in Portugal it is difficult, if not impossible, to obtain calculations, measurements and detailed drawings of the Execution Projects, given that we are dealing with structures that have been in operation for around 40 years.

This diagnosis basically involves an analysis of the channel along its entire length, focusing on the following aspects:
1) Condition of the channel in structural terms, in particular the condition of the backbone and wake.
2) Survey of the channel implantation characteristics – sections on embankment, excavation and half slope.
3) Survey of existing aqueducts – intersection of water lines with channel layout.
4) Survey of the susceptible areas to under pressure.

This diagnosis will result in the type/types of rehabilitation to be carried out, particularly:

– Complete/partial replacement of the channel structure.
– Drainage systems to be carried out outside or inside the channel, including the activation or construction of new aqueducts.
– Definition of the type of waterproofing, as an element that will have to guarantee the watertightness of the irrigation channel, ensure a greater speed of flow and minimise maintenance and cleaning.
